The other day I was thinking how there seems to be givers and takers in this life. It's important to be both to have a balance in one's life. As I was mulling it over, the thought occurred to me that maybe it would be better to be sharers (is there such a word?). So tonight we had a special home evening with our daughter and her family. We watched the animated movie about Joseph in Egypt and then talked very briefly about how Heavenly Father has always taught us to store food back when it is available for the times when there is not enough. This was just about as long as two little boys, almost three and four years old, could sit still, and then on to the activity! No one is too young to help out, not even Baby "G".
We have a portable sealer, pouches, and oxygen packets that we use to store food from sources other than the church canneries, which we shared with them. We all shared the efforts to pouch up the foods that their parents had already purchased. Bless Gabriel and Garrett's kind little hearts, they thought they were helping with Papa's & Nanny's food, as they have done in the past. They were so excited when they found out that they got to take it home! They have been "helping" their parents get all organized at home so they could put all their storage away in a way that can be rotated.
There can be so much good come from all the generations working together on a project. It can teach faith, obedience, good family spirit, team work, strengthen family ties and a sense of accomplishment. We did this when our children were growing up. When many of our buckets were being emptied and stacked up in the corner of the garage, they became quite concerned! We had to remind them that those lean years we were experiencing, were exactly what the storage was for.
